Father Ugo

It is difficult to describe Father Ugo in a few words. It is hard to make people understand, only through words, the love, the devotion, his total dedication to the young and to the poor... so we will try to speak about him through one of his letters.

«When I decided to go among the poor people of Peru, I begged Huari's bishop to assign me a parish located in one of the most remote Andean valleys.

He entrusted me Chacas and Yanama, located in the center of the Cordillera Blanca, in between the 3000 and 4000 meters of altitude, at the feet of the Huascaran and Huandoy massif.

In this way mountains encircle my life. For my people, mountains are "nice" if they give pasture and wood, whereas glaciers and and snow fields remind them only of hunger and cold.

In the past 30 years, things have changed around the mountains.

From the slopes, where they grow potatoes and cereals, they have seen strange people passing by, with backpacks and colorful clothes.

What are they looking for on the peaks?

What is that attracts them over there?

Many of these newcomers take care of not stepping on the flowers, but pass by without caring over the poverty and the customs of these people.

Often they don't even realize who the people living at the feet of the mountains they are climbing are.

With the eyes of the poor farmers I look at these new "Conquistadores"... I understand, because I love the mountain too, but here they are talking about opening new routes to the summits.

Couldn't they help me to open A PATH ALSO FOR MY ANDEAN CHILDREN, farmers' sons, who are forced to migrate to Lima just to earn their daily bread?
